The river runs west under four bridges and takes its time about it: seven and a half kilometres of slow olive water, reeds along both banks, and swans that behave as though they own the place, which, strictly speaking, they may. On the town side there is a new path, five hundred and seventeen metres long and distinctly orange, that starts in a field and finishes in one.

There are fish in it. Perch mostly, trout if you are patient, and now and then a salmon that has come a long way to be disappointed. What bites is whatever is actually down there and swims up to your float, so a good spot is a good spot for a reason, and a pair of polarised glasses will show you which. Bring a rod, a tub of maggots and a flask.

What you catch is yours to keep. The proper way to eat it is off a disposable barbecue on the bank, with your coat still on. The other way is round the back of Chish & Fips, where the kitchen door keeps longer hours than the hatch and will buy a fish off you without making a fuss.
