The parcel goes down in stages: a full tray, then a bite out of it, then half a fish, then scraps, then the wrapper. What you do with the wrapper is between you and the bin, and the bins on this estate are watched more closely than you would think.

Round the back, the kitchen door keeps longer hours than the hatch - seven in the morning until eleven at night - and it will buy a fish off you if you have caught one. Perch and trout without a second thought. A salmon quickly, and without writing anything down.

It is also the best energy in Oakhaven. A fish supper will carry you through a full shift on the bins or a morning on the fly-tip round, which a sandwich will not, and it is worth the detour before a long day rather than after one.
